Okay so anybody who has ever shared more than fifteen minutes of conversation with me has probably come to the realization that I am a technology maniac. To an degree we all are, ("we" because you're obviously reading my blog). We can't escape the ever improching technical advances in our society. For the most part it has prolonged the lifespan of our species and made life generally more enjoyable. But when does convenience turn into obsession? This is probably where those under age fifty are tuning me out and the elders start to agree, but don't get me wrong. I was the first generation (the Nintendo generation) to be born with a joystick in my hand. I did more studying of Zelda maps and strategy guides as a child then my grade school geography books. This isn't my point either. Let's fast-forward twenty-two years later and examine the pro's and con's of technology in our lifes and ask ourselfs "Are we obessed?"

Well, despite Gmail being a free product the fact remains Google needs users to generate revenue and if Google feels high and mighty enough to think they can get away with releasing a faulty product it's high time they are smacked down the reality. I personally haven't utilized my AOL e-mail account in over eight years but giving the Google's stubbornness and lack of interest in end user experience with their product I'm going to switch my account over to their competitor. AOL may be considered the ugly ducking of Internet portals but let's face it Google's 800 pound gorilla flew the coop when their software engineers lost focus on innovation and management started concentrating on their stock price and buying others innovations instead of developing their own. i.e. Youtube & Google Earth.

So it comes as no surprise that Google can't respond to the IMAP Windows Mobile issue, they're too ill-prepared to do so. I encourage angry users to look else where for IMAP service providers, AOL may not have the prestige they enjoyed in the early 90's but their engineers have provided a rock solid IMAP experience that functional across all platforms including Windows Mobile. So the choice for me is easy.

Adiós Gmail... mail@aol.com here I come.

PS AOL does provide unlimited e-mail storage also, as a another instinctive to leave.

Relying on technology on the daily basis has it's pitfalls, our beloved trinkets of plastic and silicon have the ability to really perform quite a number on our stress levels. Especially on days when it appears as if our gadgets have unionized against us. Persistent trouble shooting, scouring Internet forums for hours hoping to discover a solution simple enough for a programing novice to to understand. Ahhhh the joys of technology.
can't live with it, can't live without it... or can we?

If you're wondering what spawned this post... today I discovered a major undocumented imitation in Final Cut Pro this afternoon, apparently if you want to convert a video from your timeline into a DV-NTSC compressed AVI file you're restricted to keeping the file size under 5GB in size otherwise the codec will generate sporadic errors throughout the newly encoded file rendering it useless! Surely Apple is aware of this flaw, I can only suppose they're ignoring it as the AVI format is typically common on a PC and Final Cut's native format is Apple's own proprietary MOV Quicktime... but of course you already knew that.

Related Links:
Cnet Rage: Unleash Your Tech Fury
Into Tomorrow - Tech Rage Stories
